What Are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are thin shells designed to mimic the ideal appearance of natural teeth. Cosmetic dentists cement these appliances over teeth to conceal defects such as chips, cracks, gaps, and stains, and they can completely transform a smile in as few as two treatments. By covering troubled teeth, dental veneers can also protect them from further injury and decay while bolstering the patient’s self-confidence, and they are strong and durable enough to withstand the pressures of daily chewing and last up to fifteen years or more with excellent care.

The Process of Getting Veneers

Lady receives veneers?

Veneers aren’t for everyone, so the first step toward getting them is to have a consultation with Dr. Silfa. During this meeting, Dr. Silfa will examine your mouth and discuss your concerns and goals with you to determine if you are a good candidate for the treatment and develop an effective treatment plan that involves at least two appointments. After you are cleared for the treatment, you’ll come in for your first appointment, during which you’ll receive a local anesthetic before a small amount of enamel is removed from each tooth. Dr. Silfa will then take bite impressions, fix temporary veneers in place, and send you on your way.

After a skilled laboratory technician crafts your permanent veneers, you’ll come back to our office for your second appointment. Dr. Silfa will remove your temporary veneers, cement the permanent set in place, and make any final adjustments. You’ll then be ready to enjoy your new smile.

Understanding the Cost of Veneers

People go over paperwork

Since veneers are usually considered an elective cosmetic treatment, they are not typically covered by insurance plans. However, we offer options that can make paying for veneers easier such as:

  • In-house loyalty membership: By paying a flat annual fee, you can receive preventive services as well as discounts on other smile-enhancing treatments.
  • Financing options: We offer financing options through CareCredit, LendingPoint, and Proceed Finance, third-party financiers that offer plans designed to break your bill into monthly installments with little to no interest that can be easily managed.

Our staff will be more than happy to discuss your payment options with you during your consultation.

Veneers FAQs

Are Veneers Permanent?

Veneers aren’t technically permanent because they will eventually have to be replaced. However, they are considered to be irreversible. To ensure that veneers fit properly on the teeth, small amounts of enamel need to be removed. This will not grow back, so teeth that have been prepared in this way will always need to be covered with veneers or dental crowns.

What Happens to the Teeth Under Veneers?

The veneers themselves do not harm your teeth, and only a minimal amount of enamel is removed. The bonding material used to attach your restoration to your tooth is also completely safe. Since the enamel is covered with the veneer, the procedure does not increase the risk of cavities. You still need to brush and floss regularly to prevent tooth decay from occurring underneath the veneers. You should also limit the amount of sugar you are consuming and attend your regular dental cleanings.

Do Veneers Give You a Lisp?

Some people have trouble pronouncing certain words when they first get veneers, resulting in a temporary lisp. This is partially due to muscle memory. The tongue is not used to accounting for the presence of veneers when you talk. The tiny difference in thickness affects the way the tongue moves. The tongue will eventually adjust on its own, but pronunciation of certain sounds can make a difference.

Can Veneers Be Used for Bite Corrections?

Veneers don’t change the actual position of the teeth or the jaw, so their effectiveness for treating bite problems varies depending on how severe the issue is. If you have a mild open bite, veneers can make the teeth look longer and wider so that they appear to line up correctly. You can also use veneers to hide small gaps between the teeth. Veneers are only ever recommended for bite issues that don’t cause significant oral health problems yet affect your appearance.

How Many Veneers Will I Need?

The goal of veneers is for all of your visible teeth to match, so you’ll receive an appropriate number of veneers to accomplish that goal. Some people get a single veneer to cover one too, while others get anywhere from 6 to 12 veneers for a more complete smile makeover. During your consultation with us, we will examine your smile and determine the right number of veneers for you.
