5 Tips for Making Your Next Dental Checkup Easier (for You and Your Dentist!)

Routine dental checkups and cleanings are one of the best ways to keep your smile healthy—they are the absolute cornerstone to maintaining your dental wellness! They help prevent cavities, catch issues early, and of course, keep your teeth looking their best. But while dental visits are usually quick and simple, a little preparation can make the experience even smoother, for both you and your dentist. Here are some tips to keep in mind before your next appointment.

1. Brush and Floss Before Your Visit

Arriving with clean teeth allows your dentist and hygienist to focus on examining and polishing, not removing excess buildup that you could’ve prevented on your own by maintaining good habits. A quick brush and floss before your appointment is a small step that makes a big difference. However, don’t think your provider won’t be able to tell if you’ve been neglecting the habit! In addition to brushing right before your visit, be sure you’re regularly brushing at least twice a day.

2. Share Your Medical and Dental History

Be sure to update your dentist about any new medications, health conditions, allergies, or dental concerns that might have developed since your last visit. This information helps your dental team provide the safest care possible, while also ensuring it’s perfectly tailored to your individual needs. If this is your first visit to this particular dental office, you can expect to be asked about this information on your new patient paperwork.

3. Limit Food and Drinks Beforehand

Aim to avoid heavy meals, sugary snacks, or drinks like coffee and soda right before your appointment. Not only will this keep your breath fresh, but it also makes the cleaning process more pleasant (and easier) for everyone involved! If you’re not able to brush and floss between eating and your appointment, you can at least rinse your mouth out with water.

4. Arrive a Few Minutes Early

Arriving with time to spare gives you a chance to relax in the waiting area, update forms, and fully settle in, so you’re not feeling rushed when your appointment begins. Dentists truly appreciate patients who show up on time—and showing up early ensures you’re respecting the time set aside for your appointment. This also means that if there is any outstanding paperwork that needs to be completed beforehand, you have adequate time to do so.

5. Stay Relaxed and Communicate Clearly

If you’re nervous, don’t hesitate to let your dentist and hygiene team know. They can explain each step in greater detail, offer breaks as needed, and help you feel more at ease throughout your appointment. Good communication also ensures that your dentist thoroughly addresses any concerns, such as sensitivity or discomfort.

The bottom line is, your dental checkup should be a positive, stress-free experience. By preparing a little ahead of time, keeping up with daily oral care, and communicating with your dentist, you’ll ensure a smooth and effective visit!
